Southern Colima is home to one of the most productive lime-growing regions in the country. That productivity depends on the health of the ecosystem around it, starting with pollinators and soil. Every hectare recovered with native vegetation gives shelter back to local wildlife, improves water retention and adds to carbon capture across the region.
With that purpose in mind, we took part in ReforestAcción “Siembra el futuro, planta un árbol” (Sow the future, plant a tree) 2026, the institutional program of the University of Colima, which this year aims to plant more than 12,000 trees across the state.
A program that builds on itself
ReforestAcción has been running since 2023 and grows every year in both participants and trees planted. Its value lies in continuity: a tree planted three years ago already gives shade, already fixes carbon and already sustains life around it.
Our contribution this year was 400 coral, pingüica, rosa morada and primavera trees, all species adapted to the conditions of the region. Over five years, that group has an estimated carbon sequestration potential of 45 tons of CO₂ per year.
Why these species?
The species were not chosen at random. Coral, rosa morada and primavera are abundant-flowering trees that work as a food source for bees and other pollinators. At SiCar Farms we run apiaries and bee conservation programs, so increasing the availability of blossom in the area has a direct effect on pollination across the whole zone, including neighboring groves that are not ours.
Pingüica, for its part, is a native species that helps stabilize soil and sustain biodiversity on land that transitions between farmland and wild vegetation.
The benefit does not stop at the property line. A corridor of native vegetation improves environmental conditions across the entire municipality.
Agroecology and Sustainability at Grupo GO
Grupo GO has an Agroecology Department and a Sustainability area that operate year-round. They are the source of the biofertilizers and biorepellents we use in the field, the bee conservation programs and the solar energy projects at our facilities.
ReforestAcción fits into that work. That is why, beyond providing the land, we take on the care of the trees, irrigation and nutrition, through their earliest growth stages, which are the ones with the highest mortality.
Daniel Gudiño Ochoa, director of SiCar Farms, put it this way during the event: “Reforesting does not end when you plant a tree; that is where the responsibility of making it grow begins.”
The Rector of the University of Colima, Dr. Christian Jorge Torres Ortiz Zermeño, made the same point when he recalled that planting is half of the action, and the other half is staying with the tree through its first stage of life.

Hundreds of students, faculty and university volunteers spent the morning in the field. They were joined by Armando Reyna Magaña, Mayor of Tecomán; Blanca Liliana Díaz Vázquez, Chair of the UdeC Volunteer Association and head of SIGA; and Joel Nino Jr., Secretary General of the University of Colima.
Armando Reyna Magaña addressed the students to point out that their presence is essential, because they are the ones who can turn caring for the environment into an everyday practice and carry it to more people.
That is the part of the project that pays off over the longest term. Several of the people who were there will be making technical decisions about the Colima countryside in the years ahead.
Our commitment continues
We thank the University of Colima for the invitation to take part, and the Tecomán City Council for its support of the actions that strengthen the municipality.
Our commitment is to follow up on these 400 trees and to keep adding land to the coming cycles of the program. The environmental recovery of a region is measured in decades, and every season counts.
